Show us a photo that's overexposed or underexposed but you love how it turned out.
i took this in brussels and it came out quite dark but whatever i did i couldn't get the settings quite right - it was quite an overcast day and my camera doesn't enjoy those sorts of conditions. but i quite like the bluey cast it has, and especially with the yellow-gold on the building. so yes, i'm quite pleased how it turned out nevertheless.
Audio: Show us five CDs or albums that changed your life.

another satie album. this one is special for the recording of socrate which is the piece i'd choose if i ever had to pick one piece i wish i'd written. that, or the following one...
an all-round awesome album, but most especially for the recording of samuel barber's sublime knoxville, summer of 1915.
still one of the best film scores of all time, imho. opened up a whole new musical world for me. awesome film too.
trivia: did you know that michael nyman arrived at his signature style by playing the 'catalogue aria' from mozart's don giovanni in the style of jerry lee lewis?
a faceless cd on amazon!! for shame! this is the album which taught me that things don't have to be conventionally in tune to be awesomely groovy. listen to kyle gann's music at kylegann.com. in particular, try "sitting bull: do you know who i am?" from custer's ghost and please give it at least two runs through cos microtonal is a bit weird until you get used to it.
Book: Share a self-help book that meant a lot to you.
i start by stating my long-long-held belief that 99% of self-help books are a great waste of tree.
this belief has been modified in the past year from a belief that 100% of self-help books are a waste of tree.
the book which changed by mind was julia cameron's the artist's way, which i've mentioned before here, but which i think is worth waving about again. i came across this book by accident. i had reached a low point in my belief in my own abilities, and it turned up in waterstone's at just the right moment. in a fit of impulse buying i brought it home, and it has since completely changed my life. yes, it sounds hyperbole, but it helped me to go from being depressed, hating my job, unable to write, unable to believe myself capable of taking on any project for anyone else, and barely able to consider starting anything even just for myself - to where i am now, taking six months off work to work on my music, exploring different creative avenues such as drawing, producing music (albeit slowly), experimenting with new composition techniques, and working on a commission for someone else. i have more confidence in my ability to produce music of a sufficient quality to show other people and am slowly working through a number of self-promotion plans with the aim of getting my music better known.
so yep, the artist's way gets two very enthusiastic thumbs up from me.
Show us the best beach you have visited.

in general i'm not much of a one for beaches. deep water frankly scares me silly and i'm always nervous of being dragged out to see in a rip and eaten by sharks. but there is one beach which i just adored from the moment we arrived - red beach on santorini, in the greek islands. you have to practically climb down a mountain to get there, and the sand is black and blazing hot (not fun on the feet and i highly recommend hiring a sun lounge unless you're made of asbestos) and the water was really rather chilly with tiny little fish swimming about. barely any waves and very calm, even though a decent depth - a perfect wallowing beach.

hmm. it's kind of hard to pick just one out of sooooo many (455 - and that's just the ones i've posted!) even though i think i posted a lot of rubbish to flickr this year for which i humbly apologise. not sure what's happened really... anyway, so here's a selection (although some of the rubbish is because my camera has taken to just putting a sprinkling of digital noise all over everything so it's rare i get a crystal-clear shot any more)

Show us why you love the city you live in.

because it can be beautiful:
because it's also grimy:
because it's close to the countryside and to beaches which aren't like beaches at all:
and because it's close to everywhere else i could possibly want to be:
oh, and because it's where i've wanted to live all my life. mustn't forget that!
Give us artsy fartsy.
